Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are a neat and natural-looking way to cover an unsightly or broken tooth and protect it from further damage. They fit completely over a whole tooth, concealing cracks, decay, discolouration, and improving the function and strength of root treated or heavily filled teeth. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, and can also be used to support a dental bridge or fixed to a dental implant for a highly aesthetic finish.

What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown helps restore the function of a tooth that is decayed or damaged. It allows a tooth to regain its original shape and size, functioning as your natural teeth would. You could need a dental crown for a number of reasons, such as:
- A damaged or decayed tooth
- Cracked or broken tooth
- Small, misshapen tooth
- A fragile tooth after a root canal treatment
- A tooth that is so discoloured that veneers and whitening are not viable
Restore Your Damaged Tooth With A Dental Crown
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that restores a decayed, broken, weak or worn-down tooth. Dentists also use crowns to cover dental implants and root canal-treated teeth. Made from a variety of materials, including metal, resin and porcelain, crowns last between five and 15 years with proper care.
The Benefits Of Dental Crowns
We aim to repair damaged or decayed teeth wherever possible to help our patients maintain their oral health. Avoiding damaged or decayed teeth can lead to pain, sensitivity, gum disease and even tooth loss, which a dental crown treatment can help to prevent. There are many benefits of dental crowns, such as:
- Protects a decayed tooth from further damage
- Can colour match your existing teeth
- Improves the aesthetics of your teeth
- Durable treatment option
- Can protect a tooth after a root canal treatment
The Process
The dental crown procedure is a common restorative treatment designed to protect and restore damaged teeth.
1

Consultation
During your consultation, we’ll conduct a thorough examination of your oral health. Then we’ll discuss your smile concerns and the results you’re looking to achieve. We will take digital scans and clinical photographs as well as x-rays to then design your smile.
2

Preparation
Crowns require for your natural teeth to be shaved down in order to make space for the crowns fitting. Unfortunately, this means the crowns process is permanent, so make sure you’re fully committed to having crowns! This step can be slightly invasive, so your dentist at BDC will use local anaesthetic to make sure the treatment is painless.
3

Digital Impressions
We take precise digital impressions, ensuring a perfect fit and bite alignment. These impressions are sent to our specialised lab for the custom crafting of your crown.
4

Fitting and Bonding
Once your new crowns have been made by the dental lab, your dentist at BDC will remove the temporary crown and fit the permanent crown. This will be the permanent fitting and will be much more durable and natural looking than the temporary crown.

Perfect Your Smile With a Single Tooth or Full Mouth Dental Crown Treatment
Dental crowns are custom-made restorations that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. They can serve as a protective covering for weakened teeth or be paired with dental implants to fully replace a missing tooth.
Dental bridges are an alternative solution for replacing missing teeth. A bridge consists of a dental crown placed on each side of an artificial tooth or teeth, also known as pontics. The adjacent natural teeth are used to support the two crowns, creating a secure space for the pontic(s) to rest in between comfortably.

Your dentist at Biggleswade Dental Centre will recommend dental crown treatment typically when a tooth is cracked, severely worn, weakened by decay, or has a large filling. They are also used after root canal treatment, to support a dental bridge, or to improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth/teeth.
Dental crowns can be made from several materials, including porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, metal alloys, or a combination of materials. The most suitable option depends on the tooth’s location, bite forces, aesthetic goals, and our dentist’s recommendation.
With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups at Biggleswade Dental Centre, dental crowns can last 10–15 years or longer. Avoiding habits such as teeth grinding and biting hard objects can help extend the lifespan of your dental crown.
